Creative Writer With A Passion For Music

Is June Marieezy the new Jhene Aiko?

Although I love a decent rave I also like to take a step back and have some me time. This includes listening to contemporary R&B music where the lyrics really speak to me. A couple of years ago I discovered the elegant Jhene Aiko, who as many would describe, has a voice of an angel. She kinda reminded me of a Greek Siren; she was mysterious and had an angelic vibe about her. She was still yet to impact the music industry and make a particularly large name for herself, and I guess that’s what made her music so alluring. Those who did discover this talented musician deemed themselves lucky and relished in her unique talent. Her sound is very romantic, and modernises 90’s R&B classics and makes it into her own. When listening to her heart felt music, the listener is drawn into her magical world surrounded by all things beautiful and kind. As most R&B is sexualised these days, indeed some lyrics may seem sexual, but Aiko turns it into romance.

Fast forwarding into present tense, I have come across another exceptional artist – June Marieezy. Now the reason why I make this comparison is because I found Jhene Aiko to have such a unique sound, and it is so refreshing to learn another ambitious artist can join this category. Both successful and liberating women in their own right, their music speaks to me as a woman, and touches my heart. Now isn’t that something amazing. June Marieezy is rising in popularity, and the songs she performs have a feel good aura about them, something that is invigorating to have in the chilled, R&B genre.

I have listed my favourite tracks from both artists to talk about, and if you’re engrossed in what I have described and intrigued to know more then definitely give them a listen!

Bed Peace

One of Jhene Aiko’s earliest hits, Bed Peace was released as a single and later on made an appearance in her album. She begins with talking about her day-to-day activities, and how bland they are in comparison to her feelings of love and the intense emotion she has for her lover. For those of you who are attachable to sentiment then this song will speak to you indefinitely. Aiko manages to form an emotional connection with the listener as she opens up over her feelings of attachment in this track, and with the feature of Childish Gambino, he adds the perfect balance of hip hop to the song.

Happiness is Free

June Marieezy released this track in 2011 which was one of her first songs to debut. There is a flawless balance of R&B and soul, bestowing chilled vibes. She reminds us that happiness is free, which many of us lose in our busy, disappointing everyday lives. The song represents the goodness of nature around us and rediscovers love and emotional attachment.

The Pressure

This track is fairly slower and deeper. The beauty of Aiko’s voice serenades the listener into effortlessly understanding the depth of the song. For some, this time of sound may be a tad intense for their liking, but I can comprehend for the right setting, Aiko performs to the desired mood.

Fly

I love love love this track. Probably one of my utter favourites. Marieezy portrays freedom, feminism and romance with the world around her. She encourages the listener to love themselves, and as she has expressed in her previous track “Happiness is Free”, your happiness is indeed solely up to you and how you move forward in life. Use your ambition and enthusiasm, take charge of your own happiness and that is the key to making your dreams come true and the potential of making your desires become reality. The atmosphere is very spiritual in this track, and Marieezy takes the listener on an extraordinary journey above the clouds and into a bright, virtuous future.

The Worst

The Worst is undoubtedly Jhene Aiko’s most popular and successful track, and for good reason. It is very liberating. Progressively moving away from her loving and tender nature to sing passionately about her deep romantic feelings for her lover, this song describes how she is independent, and does not need this person who has broken her heart. Have you ever felt that sense of freedom after a bad break up, and you want that person to know your life is an improvement from that deteriorating relationship you have just escaped from? Well Jhene Aiko conveys that notion for you. Aiko embraces her harder skin in this track, and you can sense the power and determination in her voice. That is what makes her music so brilliant, the ability to revert back and forth through the various stages of passion in her music.
